Human Trafficking/Girls Empowerment

Human Trafficking occurs in the United States at the rate of approximately 14,500 to 17,500 people each year, most of it revolving around sex and forced labor. We at Thrive became open to the challenge of educating our community regarding Human Trafficking, and began providing the community with educational materials, stipends to speakers, and fliers. In response to the need to educate our community Thrive has sponsored events highlighting the issue of Human Trafficking that have been attended by upwards of 300 community members. We feel this is a very important issue and we intend to be the forefront of exposing these atrocities leveled on our community. Thrive has been working diligently to provide our community the support needed to overcome all barriers that would seek to hinder growth. One of our much productive methods has been our Girls Empowerment Project.

The Project is expanding its efforts to end the tragic exploitation of young women and girls by building resilience, self-esteem, and moral character. The Project also fosters leadership and entrepreneurial skills through workshops offered to girls. Empowered girls mean healthier families. Families are more beneficial when girls are educated, healthy, and empowered. In addition, empowered girls are less likely to be trafficked. Empowered, educated girls have healthier, better-educated children and higher wages – helping to break the cycle of poverty. If you want to be a part of something special please contact us.

In 2019, there were 13,249 people living with HIV in San Diego County. In 2019, 366 people were newly diagnosed with HIV. So, in a socially conscious effort to reduce the disparity in HIV infections among Black and Latino individuals and others, Thrive Lemon Grove saw the need and opportunity to partner with the collective efforts of San Diego County to reduce and eliminate all new infections of HIV in the next 10 years through the “Getting to Zero” initiative.

Thrive Lemon Grove came to understand that one of every 11 county residents living with HIV is unaware of their status.” We believe, along with the County of San Diego, that everyone should be tested for HIV at least once in their lifetime, and more frequently if they have ongoing risk. While HIV testing is already free and widely available throughout San Diego County, Getting to Zero along with Thrive Lemon Grove seeks to ensure HIV testing is offered during all routine doctor visits.
